A campaign launched in Melbourne
The campaign accompanied National Self Advocacy Day at Collingwood Town Hall. Self-advocates organised the gathering with the Self Advocacy Resource Unit; an online stream enabled participation from elsewhere in Australia.
“We need ongoing consistent funding to support the next generation of self advocates to have their say,” Butcher said. [1]
Local groups push for practical changes
Butcher described groups pressing for better public transport and assessing the accessibility of community facilities. He also described a peer group using cooking sessions to learn how to exercise choice in everyday life. He warned that project-based funding threatened their continuity: without further support, organisations would be unable to maintain the groups. He called for stable support so future self-advocates could continue speaking for themselves. [1]
