Protection when a partner needs care

The Justice Ministry explained that a registered partner could make treatment decisions when the other person could not care for themselves or express their wishes. Protections also covered pension amounts accrued but unpaid before death, and income-tax relief for gifts and loans between partners. [1]

A separate legal status

Parliament explicitly distinguished partnership from marriage. Registration concerned adults with close personal ties, a shared household and a commitment to mutual care. The reform created defined rights and duties, giving those relationships a formal place in public records. [2][1]

Community advocacy beyond registration

In its Mozaīka 2024 project, the LGBT rights organisation had made legal, economic and social protection for all families a priority. Its programme also addressed hate speech, hate crime and access to healthcare, alongside training for teachers, social workers and other professionals.
