Standards need responsible institutions

The regulations cover standards for accessible built environments and ways of assessing physical access. International IDEA said the workshop brought together disability commissions and relevant agencies to secure commitments at national and state levels. The work involved the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption programme and civil-society organisations.

Housing officials receive the regulations

In a separate statement dated 31 July 2024, the commission reported that its executive secretary, James David Lalu, had presented the regulations to housing minister Ahmed Musa Dangiwa. Lalu said many public buildings did not meet the required standards. The discussion focused on applying the specifications to housing and public facilities. [2]

State-level work continues

International IDEA’s 2025 outcome report credited disability organisations in Edo State with sustained advocacy for stronger institutions. It reported that the state disability commission had premises, staff and a budget, while stressing the need for adequate funding.
