Disabled people set the priorities
The campaign brought together more than twenty organisations and was led by elected representatives of disability organisations. In Sightsavers’ account of its first year, steering committee chair Nasima Akhter urged the government to make the law work in everyday life. Sightsavers served as the campaign secretariat. [1]
A budget and functioning committees
The coalition’s April 2023 policy brief called for functioning disability committees, clearer budget allocations and regular monitoring. It also sought stronger cooperation between ministries and participation by disability organisations in assessing progress. These proposals addressed the gap between legislation and the services people could actually use. [3]
Political parties join the discussion
In September 2023, the campaign held a dialogue with representatives of the Awami League, Bangladesh Nationalist Party and Communist Party. According to Sightsavers, party leaders committed to including disability-law implementation in their election manifestos. These pledges put the campaign’s demands on the parties’ election agendas.
