A reading centre and a digital library
The National Book Trust partnership planned a Universal Design Center for Reading in Dehradun, offering print, braille, electronic and audio materials. The separate agreement with Daisy Forum of India aimed to create and distribute accessible books through Sugamya Pustakalaya, using formats suited to readers who cannot use standard print. [1]
Students contribute accessible texts
Vasanta College for Women documented a volunteer project running from April 2022 to March 2023. After technical training from Saksham Trust, students converted books into accessible formats. The trust uploaded them to Sugamya Pustakalaya. The college's account shows how local production work supported the library.
Independent reading also needs usable equipment
In a July 2023 account of a Marrakesh Treaty webinar, DAISY described Naveen, a blind schoolboy in rural India. His school had lacked accessible books. A project provided solar-powered audio players containing accessible textbooks, enabling him and classmates to read independently. The example connected book availability with equipment pupils could actually use.
