A route into local decision-making

ILMI’s disclosure to Ireland’s lobbying register identified community development worker Paula Soraghan as responsible for approaching elected representatives. The stated aim was to build cross-party support for the launch. [2][1]

Training and peer support build the network

ILMI’s 2025 annual report described support for local leadership through disability equality training, mentoring, peer learning and policy engagement. Waterford joined new organisations in Meath, Donegal and Tipperary, alongside established groups elsewhere. The network was organised around disabled people advocating for their own rights and inclusion. [3]

Housing provides a practical example

The September bulletin also described neighbouring Wexford’s involvement in its council’s housing policy committee. Chairperson Ruth Fitzmaurice raised accessible housing and difficulties with adaptation grants. Soraghan emphasised collective organising through VOICE, showing how local groups could bring everyday barriers into public-policy discussions. [1]
