Young participants set their priorities

The account described consultations facilitated in July 2022 and Leonito’s support from the disability organisation Ra’es Hadomi Timor Oan. He received a wheelchair and returned to school, while inaccessible routes and an oversized chair still limited independence. Esperansa Marcal dos Santos called for information, services and opportunities to lead an organisation with friends. [1]

Guidance for organisers

UNICEF published the guidance in December 2022 with the Secretary of State for Youth and Sport. Consultations involved young people, families, local leaders and disability organisations in Dili, Ermera and Bobonaro. Its practical recommendations help organisers include young people with disabilities in activities and civic participation.

Assistance and travel costs matter

A September 2023 UN situational analysis identified continuing participation barriers. It recommended accessible venues, sign-language interpretation and advance materials, alongside support for accompanying personal assistants or carers. Covering transport and accommodation costs where needed was another recommendation for making participation possible beyond the capital.
