Court decisions open the way

ILGA-Europe highlighted the court’s decisions in its July 2022 newsletter. The judgments required lawmakers to remedy discrimination within six months and provided an interim arrangement for marriage and joint adoption. The decisions had been adopted on 16 June 2022 and were publicised in July. [3]

New definitions take effect

The amended code entered into force on 31 January 2023. It defined marriage as the life union of two people, replacing the reference to a husband and wife. The ministry explained that same-sex couples had already been able to marry and jointly adopt under the court’s interim arrangement. [3]

Existing couples receive a route to marriage

Partners in civil unions were given six months to declare that they wanted to convert their union into a marriage. Administrative units had to notify them of the choices and legal consequences. Marriage certificates could identify spouses without gender labels, and their issue was exempt from fees. [3]
