Communication and treatment needs matter

The guideline covers help with communication, stressful treatment situations and participation in a therapeutic plan. A close relative or another person with an equivalent personal bond can accompany the patient. The hospital certifies medical necessity for the companion’s health insurer and can confirm attendance for the employer. [2][4]

Patient representation shaped the criteria

The German muscular-dystrophy organisation DGM reported that its social-services head Antje Faatz worked in the guideline group for seven months. She contributed experience of people with neuromuscular conditions. The published criteria include movement, breathing, eating and swallowing impairments, alongside communication and other support needs. [3][2]

DGM identifies a remaining gap

The benefit was subject to eligibility conditions, including receipt of integration-assistance services by the patient. In December 2022, DGM welcomed the change but called for wider coverage for disabled people who needed a companion without qualifying for that assistance. The new arrangement therefore did not cover every person needing hospital support. [3]
