Community support reaches several schools
A December 2023 UNICEF profile described Ouédraogo as an interpreter who had learned sign language from deaf friends. His association, led by Ouattara Mamadou, had helped place 50 children in inclusive schools in Abobo and Yopougon. Its activities also included literacy and information about sexual and reproductive health.
Learning through play and signs
At Agbekoi 2, teacher Berthé Karidja said games helped pupils engage with lessons. Children also used the playground for learning activities. Among the pupils was Hassan, aged 12, who travelled roughly five kilometres from Yopougon with his mother each morning. Ouédraogo had supported his inclusion at the school. [1]
Physical access remains part of education
A separate UNICEF profile published on 29 May 2024 followed Grace, a 16-year-old wheelchair user who wanted to become an author. It described support from her mother and classmates where places were inaccessible. Her experience drew attention to the physical barriers students could encounter alongside barriers to communication.
