Teachers need space to talk
Art teacher Veriuska Vásquez described food shortages and the pressure on staff supporting children. HI specialist Rogxana Pérez visited twice weekly, creating opportunities for teachers to discuss experiences and helping children express feelings. Vásquez said the sessions gave staff tools to manage emotions and continue teaching. [1]
Community volunteers help people communicate
A separate HI report that day described psychosocial work with Indigenous communities in Amazonas. Pérez explained that community volunteers translated messages, allowing people to speak and be heard. ORPIA representative Wesiyuma Angelito Hernández helped identify needs, while project manager Alejandro Rivas stressed consultation with community leaders. [2]
Support links with wider services
HI’s September 2023 country plan had included Átures in a project combining professional psychosocial support, assistive products, sanitation and food assistance. It identified Indigenous people, disabled people, older residents and migrant communities among those to be reached, with ORPIA as an ally. The planned project period ran from June 2023 to June 2025.
